HOMILY FOR THE EASTER SUNDAY — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “HE AROSE! HE AROSE!! ALLELUIA, CHRISTIAN AROSE!!!”

That chorus thunders through Christian churches in joyful proclamation of life today as we celebrate another Easter; thanking God for the gift of life, indeed, for faith that gives us the hope of new life in Christ. Once God worked this most significant of miracles by raising His Son to life, the first testament was an empty tomb, from which proclamations rang out, according to the testimony of the evangelists and Early Christian witness. The befuddlement that the empty tomb created was quickly resolved once the Risen Lord himself started visiting his scattered, disappointed and fearful disciples on a mission of regathering. They saw him, ate with him, embraced him, and were reconstituted so that they could become credible witnesses that God raised Jesus from the dead as we see in today’s first reading.

St. Paul, from his experience and encounter with the Risen Christ, would spend the rest of his life as a witness to the resurrection as we see in today’s second reading, and especially as he recounts in 1 Corinthians 15. In Paul’s testimony, we come to understand that Jesus’ resurrection has a direct impact on our lives. In baptism, that special Easter sacrament, we die with Christ and rise with him to a new life, which must now be manifested in our entire lives thereafter. That is why we are called an Easter people; an Alleluia people, whose song of joy must be in constant praise of our loving God, for the gift of new life received through Jesus’ resurrection and our participation in it. Such a participation is with a view to being raised with him at end of our earthly lives, to live with him forever in heaven. May the blessing, peace and joy of Easter abide with us all now and forever.
Lord, fill us with your Spirit peace, joy and life at Easter and beyond. Amen.
