HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF ARCHANGELS — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Daniel 7:9-10,13-14, Ps. 138:1-5, John 1:47-51

The Archangels are God’s chief messengers and ministers. They serve God’s purposes and are often sent by God to assist humans, deliver God’s word to them, and accompany them as God’s actual presence in difficult times. Michael (meaning, Who is Like God?), the battle general of the heavenly hosts, fights our battles against the devil. Gabriel (meaning, the Strength of God) bears God’s word and delivers it to humans. He was the Angel of the Annunciation of the coming Messiah. Raphael (meaning, God’s Remedy) is a well-known companion of humans on their journeys and a healer as well.

He features prominently in the book of Tobit, healed Tobit’s eyes and accompanied his son, Tobias, on the long search for fortune and a wife. While the Angels exist primarily to serve God’s glory, their activities often take place in the human sphere. The book of Revelation has them always around the Throne and in the heavenly worship of the One on the Throne and the Lamb. Yet, they are always at the service of God as messengers, in relation to human beings and the created world. God extends his care to us through them. Like the angels, we too are God’s agents and messengers. Through us, God extends his care to others. Like the angels, we must be willing messengers so that others may praise and thank God for the blessings we have been to them.

Lord, keep us under the watchful care of your Angels. Amen.
