HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE – 27TH DECEMBER
HOMILY THEME: A CREDIBLE WITNESS
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
HOMILY: (Jn. 20:1-8) December 27, 2018, Feast of St. John the Evangelist.
In today’s Gospel, Feast of St. John The Apostle and Evangelist, Peter and the beloved disciple (John) visited the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. When John saw it, he believed. He also echoed this out in the second reading in his first letter. What he wrote were what he saw, heard, and touched. It meant he had experienced what he was testifying to and believed the same.
To be a credible witness, one must have experience. John , no doubt was close to Jesus. He was always pictured beside Him. In most of the significant events in the life and ministry of Jesus, John was always there. His witnessing is vast and proximate. Not only that, He knew Jesus so much.
What John witnessed was transmitted to the early Christians. The early Christians transmitted the same to the next generation, then the next, up to our time. We are now the designated transmitters of the deposit of faith of the Church. It is important that we must be faithful to what were taught. But we must be able to apply them in our present situations and keep improving it by discovering their true worth and full potential.

It is in this sense that Church leaders and the priests are not easily swayed by the majority, mob rule, or pressure from anyone. Jesus made his teachings clear. It is the duty and responsibility of the priest to teach the same, no more, no less. Faithfulness in the teachings of Jesus is the mark of a true disciple. Paul even threatened those who will not be faithful. Even an angel, if it is not faithful to the teachings, is cursed. Faith is not about the majority. It is about what the founder said and did. John, in his Gospel made an effort to fully transmit not only what Jesus said and did but their intentions, messages, and discipline. With the evangelists like John, we can be assured of the certainty of the message.
