HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF THE ARCHANGELS

HOMILY THEME: THE FEAST OF THE ARCHANGELS

BY: Fr. Livinus Igbodekwe

HOMILY:
The Word “angelos” , “Mal’ak” (Angel) means “messenger”. We believe in angels because Jesus Christ believed in them and talked much about them – Matt 18:10, Jn 1:51, for example. In the OT Angels were rampantly talked about as messengers of God’s presence, protectors (Gen 3:24), comforters (Gen 21:17,18), announcers (Judges 13).

In the Letter to the Hebrews 1:7 we find the nature of angels as winds and flames of fire. The angelic Doctor Thomas Aquinas says that there are hierrarchy of beings – Godhead, Angels, man, animals, plants. Angels are superior to man because they are pure beings and noncorporeal. They move with the movement of their wills.

Their speed supercedes the speed of Light. According to the same Doctor angels are classified into 9 choirs according to their proximity to the throne of God, namely: seraphs, cherubs, thrones, principalities, powers, dominations, virtues, archangels, angels. The angels and archangels are nearest to us. We know the names of Rapheal, Michael, Gabriel others were not mentioned by scripture. There are myriads of them. Let us engage them to our service.
Shalom!!!
