(Lk. 1:39-56) The Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth

In the day’s Gospel, as we end the Month of May which the Catholic community celebrated as a month of giving recognition to the Mother of God, we punctuate it with the celebration of the visitation of the pregnant MARY (with Jesus) to her equally pregnant cousin Elizabeth (with JOHN the Baptist). We marvel at this significant event when the savior and the baptist met while still in the womb of their parents. We take note of the condition of MARY who travelled a long distance “in haste” in order to attend to her old cousin. Mary must have been concerned of the situation of Elizabeth more than herself. It was no joke to carry a pregnancy at a later age. Besides, she was quite advanced in her pregnancy. Also, she must very excited to bring Elizabeth the Good News that she will be He mother of the Son of God. She could not contain to herself a very great blessing specially to a young woman like her.

May the former but more of the latter. Once we receive the Good News, we ought to be excited to share them. They were not meant to be for our own consumption. The Good News, after we benefit from it, should be shared. It is one of the threefold functions of Jesus namely: priestly, kingly, and prophetic. As a baptized Catholic, we have the responsibility to proclaim the Good News to others.

Jesus learned well from her mother. Even while in the womb of Mary, Jesus already brought joy to JOHN who will be His precursor. Once JESUS is born, He will spend His life proclaiming the Good News to everyone. To think that during the time of Jesus there were no cars, phones, radios, televisions, and other sophisticated gadgets for communication, He was very effective. People from everywhere who heard about Him came to listen and follow Him. He learned well from His mother. We, too must learn from the example of Mary.
