HOMILY:

(Mk. 1:12-15)
In the day’s Gospel, the First Sunday of Lent, Jesus shows us the importance of prayer and fasting against the temptations of the devil. Alone in the desert, Jesus exposed Himself to every attempt of the devil to make Him succumb to the devil’s will and disobey His Father’s will.

There, He was at His weakest, most vulnerable situation, and dependent on His Father. God did not desert His Son. The angel was there to take care of Him and let Him feel God’s presence.

This is the reason why this season of Lent we are asked to pray and fast. They were meant to make us close to God by rejecting the advances of the devil. The devil will always be there to lure us to him and to make us separate from God. By constant communication with God (prayer), we get to know Him, love Him, and serve Him better. Prayer keeps us connected with Him. We must never forget, much more miss prayer.

Fasting leaves us to ourselves and to God’s power. The devil has lots of instruments to make us sin. If we allow ourselves to be used by the devil, then, our faith will be weakened terribly. The human heart is the battlefield of sin. God will always triumph over the devil. The devil cannot triumph over us if we do not allow it. It is in making our heart rest on God that we conquer the devil.

After Jesus’ forty days and nights of fasting and prayer, He comes out proclaiming His message of repentance. Jesus embarks on His ministry, strong, focused, determined, and bold. In the same way, we must also compliment our prayers and fasting with repentance on our part and proclaiming them to there at the same time. Conversion and salvation should always be in our minds and hearts. Conversion and salvation are what God wants for us.
