HOMILY FOR THE HOLY FRIDAY — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GLORY IN AGONY

Is 52:13-53:12; Heb. 4:14-16,5:7-9; John 18:1-19:42
Good Friday is the day when Jesus reminds us that he is constantly, gently laying his hands on our heads when we are physically, emotionally, spiritually and psychologically in pain. It is the day Christ is telling us, “YOU ARE NOT ALONE, DO NOT GIVE UP”. You will grow through this. Therefore, we should know that without pain there is no gain and our glory is full of different stories. If only we focus on what we want, we shall be victorious.

Do we know the pain of rejection from someone close to us? The greatest pain and injury comes not from our enemies but from those closest to us. Psalm 55 foretells the suffering of rejection which God’s anointed King and Messiah would endure for our sake: “It is not an enemy who taunts me– then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me, then I could hide from him But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to hold sweet converse together; within God’s house we walked in fellowship” (Psalm 55:12-14).
There are three crosses in this passage today:
Cross of rejection : The story of the bad thief
The cross of reception: The second thief feared God
The cross of redemption: Jesus buys us back from the slave market of sin.
Which side of the cross of redemption are we on? Are we on the side of rejection or reception? Rejection of the cross will keep us out of paradise. Reception of the cross will make us enter into paradise. The choice is ours!
PRAYER: Lord, only you can save us from the blindness of sin and despair. May your light dispel the darkness of our lives and give us hope and joy. Fill our hearts with mercy and compassion that we may bring hope to those who have no hope and show them the light of Christ. Amen
