In a recent homily, Pope Francis, reflecting on Eve’s encounter with the serpent in Genesis 3, reminded us that it’s always better not to dialogue with the devil. We know this from experience. It’s always better to deal with temptation by making a firm resolve ‘ab initio’ not to begin an argument with the devil. If it’s evil, it can’t be good. It’s that simple. The devil is always in the details. Because of this kind of dialogue, Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden.

What better way to be reminded that strength of the will is indeed possible than through the new Eve, Mary, who conquered the devil once and for all by her YES to God? Today makes it exactly 165 years since Mary first appeared to that little girl, Bernadette of Lourdes. Through this poor fourteen year old, Mary continues to call us sinners to change our lives. Jesus’s feeding of the four thousand today clearly shows that everyone of good will is welcome at God’s table. Friends, what’s our status in Christ? Where are we?
