HOMILY FOR THE PENTECOST SUNDAY: YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: THE FIRE OF PENTECOST TRANSFORMS US!

BY: Fr. Isaac Awe

Acts. 2: 1-11, Ps. 104, 1 Cor. 12: 3-7, 12, John 14: 15-15

It’s exactly fifty days after Easter today and today ends Easter season. We are called to embrace the divine transformation volitionally and not out of compulsion (Rev 3:20).

Fire does not last long if starved of oxygen. Mission begins with a single , burning heart. The disciples did not develop a strategy, but they were first set ablaze with the power of the Holy Spirit. Their minds were reoriented and renewed to wonder, think, and question. New ideas were purged in the furnace of faith, which purged away the chaff of prejudice and judgment, to make a way for justice and peace.

Before Pentecost the disciples found it hard to do easy things ; after Pentecost they found it easy to do hard things says A. Y Gordon. Therefore,

Unless the eye catch fire,, God will not be seen.

Unless the ear catch fire, God will not be heard.

Unless the tongue catch fire, God will not be named.

Unless the heart catch fire, God will not be loved.

Unless the mind catch fire, God will not be known.

In this poem, the word “unless” begins with each petition. It invokes an urgent response. Unless you do something, nothing will happen. Lukewarm is not good enough. For us to be Pentecost people, we need to be consensually sizzling and aflame with the Holy Spirit.

We see the church on fire today. However, it’s not church building on fire , but the church, the people are on fire because the people are the church. That is what we see in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. The church was on fire. Why “Fire?” Fire is the symbol of transformation. Fire changes whatever it touches . Fire transformed former fishermen ex-religious leaders, tax collectors into disciples and apostles.

There was once a blacksmith who had two pieces of iron which he wished to weld into one. He took them just as they were, all cold and hard, and put them on the anvil, and began to hammer with all his mighty, but they were still two pieces, and they could not unite. At last he remembered what he should never have forgotten. He thrust both of them into the fire, took them out red hot, laid one on the other, and by one or two blows of the hammer they soon became one. The fire of Pentecost transforms us.

On the day of Pentecost, let us pray for a burning heart and courage to transform our lives as well the lives of others.

EFFECTS OF THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

WISDOM: For us to value the things of God.

UNDERSTANDING: To grasp Faith’s mysteries.

COUNSEL: To make wise decision.

FORTITUDE: To strengthen our will.

KNOWLEDGE: To enlighten our minds .

PIETY: To love and serve God.

FEAR OF GOD: To respect God’s majesty.

PRAYER: Lord, may we be divinely transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit and may we be beneficiaries of the fruits and gifts of the Holy spirit . Amen
