This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. This was celebrated on Thursday after Trinity Sunday. But for convenience and for the faithful to participate and fully gain its benefits, it’s moved to this Sunday. Bread forms part of our daily meal. It is one of the commonest foods found in every part of the globe. No wonder did Jesus use it analogically to refer to his body as the bread of life. This means that his body gives everlasting life unlike the ordinary bread eaten daily but does not give eternal life. In this sense, Jesus is the food and drink of those preparing for everlasting life. “I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever ” (Jn. 6:61-58).

God always provides food for all humanity. While the Jews were in the wilderness for forty years, God fed them with manna from heaven (cf. Deut. 8:2-3.14-16). This was the food their ancestors had not known. But in our time Jesus is the food for those who know him. To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus does not make Christians carnivores, rather it is his self donation to save all humanity. It means that those who eat his flesh and drink his blood are one with him. The saying goes, “man is what he eats.” We draw life from christ and become one with him when we eat his flesh and drink his blood. Jesus is holy and those who eat his flesh and drink his blood must be holy. In this sense, we need to examine ourselves sincerely because it’s holy Communion and not ordinary bread.

The body and blood of the Lord unites us with him and gives us life. He is the Word of God made flesh for us to know “that man does not live on bread alone but that man lives on everything that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Like the loaf of bread that feeds a family, Paul says, ” the fact that there is only one loaf means that, though there are many of us, we form a single body because we all have a share in this one loaf” (1Cor. 10:16-17). Since we are one with Christ and share in his body and blood, let us pray for unity and peace among divided Countries and families of the world. Happy Sunday.
