HOMILY FOR SUNDAY JUNE 19 2022

Gen. 14:18-20; 1 Cor.11:23-26; Luke 9:11-17

I remember seeing pictures of malnourished children on TV sometime ago. It was a pathetic sight. Swollen tummies, tiny limbs, big heads, bulging eyes; the tell tale signs of Kwashiorkor. This is what can happen to the body when it does not receive the necessary nutrients to keep it fresh and healthy. Starvation leads to gradual death. Friends, it’s not surprising that today we celebrate the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ; that which prevents spiritual Kwashiorkor.

Just as the body needs food, so also does the soul. It’s the function of the priest to bless bread and wine, just as Melchizedek did in the first reading. Jesus himself gave us this example, as he is very interested both in our bodily and spiritual health. Why else would he insist on feeding the five thousand, just after feeding their souls with his word? The second reading informs us that whenever we do this, we re-enact Christ’s death, his sacrifice that we might live. Are there any among us who as yet do not partake of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ? Come to confession and come to Jesus today!

Good morning dear. Happy Corpus Christi Sunday!
