HOMILY THEME: THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US!

Isaiah 52:7-10; Hebrew 1:1-6; John 1:1-18

Today, we celebrate with joy the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. This celebration marks the choice of God to take human form in order to offer us a share of his divinity. The liturgy of today invites us to reflect on the important significance of this great celebration as we savour the joy and gladness that accompanies it.

The prophet Isaiah in the first reading describes the peace and happiness accompanying the coming of the Messiah. He invites us to shout for joy and assures us that our God comes to console us. This prophecy invites us to savour the joy and happiness heralded by the coming of our saviour.

The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the Christmas is the feast of the coming of God’s Son, the radiant light of God’s glory and the perfect copy of God’s nature into the world. The coming of Christ is the ultimate revelation of God in his desire to save the human race.

The gospel of today is the famous prologue of the gospel according to John. Very rich in meaning, some concrete points are necessary to highlight. First, the Word, Christ the Son of God, was in the beginning. Also, He is God. God took flesh to dwell among us. He is the light of the world which shines forth in darkness and which darkness cannot comprehend. Those who accept him receive the power to become the children of God. These points summarise the Christmas celebration.

In our world today, peace and joy appear to be very scarce. The war in the Middle East has deprived Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, the usual aura that accompanies the event. The lingering war between Russia and Ukraine, the insecurity in Nigeria, the height of hunger and poverty in many parts of the world, and other bad conditions of living live many hopeless and sorrowful in this season.

Amidst all these, God assures us that he is with us. He is Emmanuel. The joy we celebrate today is a reminder that God does not abandon his people. If we believe in him, we will receive the power to become the children of God. Also, as children of God and partakers in his divinity, the Christmas celebration is an invitation to extend the Christmas joy to others. Through our acts of kindness, advocacy for peace, and fervent faith, we participate in making all the ends of the earth share in the joy of God’s coming among us.

May God who dwells among us today, give us the grace to share in the joy of the Christmas celebration. May his peace and joy reign once more in our world and in our lives.

Happy Christmas!
