HOMILY FOR THE THURSDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Choose life, then, so that you…may live, in the love of the Lord your God, obeying his voice, clinging to him…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Deut 30:15-20; Psalm 1 1:1-4, 6; Luke 9:22-25
The Two-Ways imagery charts an efficient path for serious-minded Lenten observers, as it helps us to begin the season by reflecting on the choices we make. The options before us are life and death. The choice is, however, ours to make.

Yet the Lord, through Moses, urges us to choose life; inviting us by that to walk in the way of the Lord and shun the company of scorners and evil. To choose life is to submit to God’s reign, abide by His ordinances and follow in Christ’s footsteps in all circumstances. The process involves a self-emptying process, giving up our will in exchange for God’s will, our ways in exchange for God’s ways and ourselves in exchange for a new life in Christ. The alternative to choosing life leads to destruction, eternal doom. Very few actually consciously choose to go that way. Yet, people’s inability to commit to the path of life necessarily puts them on the path to destruction. The choice of the path to life means that we walk with God, with Christ, bearing our crosses daily, irrespective of what our circumstances are. Lent is a good time to strengthen that walk.
Lord, strengthen my shoulders for the crosses I must bear. Amen.
