HOMILY FOR THE WEDNESDAY IN HOLY WEEK — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE ME IF I HAND HIM OVER TO YOU?”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isaiah 50:4-9, Ps 68:8-10,21-22,31,33-34, Matthew 26:14-25
On Spy Wednesday, the first reading highlights the innocence, total submission, obedience, and defenselessness/vulnerability of the Suffering Servant, Jesus, whose only trust is in God, who never fails. Without resistance to being unjustly treated, rejected and humiliated by enemies, detractors and even supposedly trusted friends, his face remains set on the Lord God, noting, “see, the Lord is my help.”

The Psalm reminds us that Jesus bore all the insult, shame and suffering for our sake, the sinless one enduring passion and death for the sinful. What is our response to this exemplary show of love and empathy? Quite often and for many, it has been one cycle of betrayal after another, through a life of sin and lack of commitment to our Christian ideals. The gospel reading highlights, once more, what the devil did with Judas as he perfected the plot to betray Jesus, despite sharing table fellowship with him; pretending to be in communion. Don’t be too quick in condemning Judas. To date, such betrayal of trust and hypocrisy thrives in our communities, families, churches, and work places. Christ is betrayed anew each time that such treachery reigns. Introspectively, we must resolve to shun every form of deception, hypocrisy and treachery.
Lord, purify our intentions and actions. Amen.
