HOMILY FOR THURSDAY 14TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “YOU RECEIVE WITHOUT CHARGE, GIVE WITHOUT CHARGE.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Hosea 11:1-4, 8-9; Psalm 79(80):2-7; Matthew 10:7-15

As we savor the joyful privilege of discipleship and mission, Jesus reminds us once more that he endows us with his power as we carry out the mandate that he has given to us. In addition to being empowered, he reiterates the need to be generous and unreserved in dispensing the gifts that we bear. Despite the information that the laborer deserves his wage, that reiteration obliges us to minister and live without a sense of entitlement and to be extra-careful in the relationship between ministry and money. Any semblance of simony must be avoided and shunned. God’s gifts and sacraments are not for sale.

Also, Jesus warns on the possibility of the rejection of both message and messenger, the experience of which must be expected and welcomed by missionaries, who must always seek new frontiers in such situations. Again, the greeting of peace must be on our lips for each home and individual that we encounter. We must, however, remember that we cannot give what we do not have. So, we must first be genuinely children of God by being makers of peace and its bearers as demanded by the beatitudes. That way, when our greeting of peace (shalom) meets with opposition, it rebounds and becomes a blessing to us. Once more, the prophet proclaims God’s mercy today. Despite Israel’s lack of the proper response to God’s superabundant love and providence, God still decided to remain faithful to God’s true nature and chose mercy over and above judgment and punishment, even reminding Himself: “I am God, and not man.” Godliness responds to human frailty and failure with love, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. God keeps the doors open so that we are able to come back from the dumps into His love and kindness. He never went away. We are the ones who desert Him. We must not resist God’s invitation; let us celebrate that goodness through a process of repentance.

Father, make us your children in fact and bless us with your peace; the gift you want us to bear to the others. Amen.
