HOMILY FOR THURSDAY 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: CELEBRATE YOUR BAPTISM!
BY: Fr. Benedict AGBO
1 Pet 2: 2-12, Mk 10: 46 – 52.
Peter is telling us in today’s 1st reading that we are God’s own people. This tremendous dignity as children of God, 1Jn 3: 1-3, also entails privileged obligations, namely, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. From this knowledge of who we are will flow the highest level of Christian morality (abstaining from the passions of the flesh that wage war against our souls) and the loftiest exercise of praise worship of God. Do we realize that what Christ did for us at baptism is even more wonderful than what he did for Bartimeus in today’s gospel. As sharers of his own royal priesthood (remember we were all anointed with the oil of chrism at baptism), we have the power to offer spiritual sacrifices to God.

Bartimeus was a blind man – the most wretched physical disability and a poor begger – the most shameful psychological condition. Rev 3: 17 says that being blind and poor is to be wretched. But he engaged in radical prayer inspite of his obstacles of blindness and the crowd’s restraint. He had faith in Divine mercy and Power. He was a grateful prayer warrior and ended up following Jesus in Thanksgiving and love. He received the triple spiritual favours /empowerment we can get ever from Jesus: mercy, spiritual sight and followership. Our baptism provides us even more; Redemption, Repentance and Regeneration. But we have refused to celebrate it in faith! We can still wake up to this challenge and celebrate it even for our children. May God bless you today!
