HOMILY FOR THURSDAY AUGUST 4 2022

(St John Mary Vianney, Curé of Ars).

Jer.31:31-34; Ps.50:12-15,18-19; Matt.16:13-23

Why did St Jean-Baptiste Vianney spend up to eighteen hours a day in the confessional? He was not an “intelligent” priest. He had no money in his bank account. No houses and no investments. His wealth was in his total dedication to God and His people. He knew that a priest was indeed useless if he could not reconcile souls to God. In 1818, he was sent to the parish of Ars-en-Dombes, an isolated village some distance from Lyon, where he remained for the rest of his life because his parishioners would not let him leave.

Friends, the psalmist today pleads for a pure heart from God on our behalf. Knowing Jesus makes us desire a life of grace in service to others. We cannot witness to Jesus if we do not know him. Yes! Authority to bind and loose comes from knowledge of the Son of God. The same knowledge that makes us endure suffering. The same knowledge that makes us rebuke Satan when he tries to distract us through material possessions. The same knowledge that makes even parish priests saints.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. St John Mary Vianney, pray for us!
