HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE II

HOMILY FOR THURSDAY AUGUST 25 2022

In our liturgy today, “the Lord Jesus promises us a great victory celebration when he returns again to put down his enemies and to establish his everlasting kingdom of peace, joy, and righteousness. That day when the Lord Jesus returns will be joy and peace for those who are prepared to meet him – but grief and sorrow for those who did not accept him as Lord and ruler of all”. ( *Don Schwager)*

In the first reading of today (1 Cor 1: 1-9), Paul at the beginning of his letter to the Corinthian faithful reminds them of their privilaged position of been chosen to fellowship with Christ. While they await the second coming of our Lord Jesus, Paul encourages them to go on living their lives with the gifts of the Spirit they have received, so that, “He will keep you steady and without blame until the last day.” This same call is been made of us today.

Jesus, in the gospel (Matt 24: 42-51) reiterates Paul’s admonition on His second coming and instructs His disciple with the parable of the thief and unfaithful servant, to be ready and not to be taken unawares when He eventually comes.

Dear friends, the evil one is always seeking for a way to deny us of the most precious gift God has given to us. That gift is having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who unreservedly gave us Himself for our salvation. It is of utmost necessity to be watchful and on guard to avert the danger of being robbed of this relationship. “God’s judgment is good news for those who are ready to meet Him!”

I pray as we journey in life today, we will open up ourselves for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in wisdom and strength, to turn away from sin and embrace God’s love, justice and holiness of life. May we declare with our lives, the splendour of God’s glory (Ps. 145: 5). Have a vigilant-full day!
