HOMILY FOR THURSDAYSEPTEMBER 1 2022

“God expects of us greater things than we can do by ourselves. When we cooperate in his works, we accomplish far beyond what we can do on our own. When God’s word is spoken his kingdom is revealed and his power is released. When people respond to God’s word with faith and obedience they are changed and made “a new creation” in Jesus Christ (2 Cor 5:17)”. *Don Schwager*
In today’s first reading (1 Cor 3: 18-23), Paul cautions the Corinthians on the dependence on human wisdom which is foolishness in the eyes of God. Total dependence on human wisdom can lead to missing the Truth (Who) which comes from God. Since everything belongs to Christ and Christ belongs to God, we must then depend solely on God from whom every good things come.

In the gospel (Luke 5: 1-11), Jesus first preaches from Simon’s boat and then allows him and his fishing companions to catch a load of fish. Jesus uses the miraculous catch to show how others will be caught up in the casting of the net of salvation.

Dear friends, we do not deserve to be blessed with salvation since, like Simon Peter, we are sinners. However, since it has been freely given to us in Christ Jesus, we are to be grateful and must be willing to do whatever we can so that others will also experience this awesome gift of salvation.

I pray as we journey in life today, we will trust not on our ingenuity but on the direction given by the Spirit of God, and like Simon Peter, we will preach the Good News in and out of season. May we uphold and teach the truth of the Gospel, the Word of God, the Truth that sets free. Have a salvation-full day!
