The first reading of today captures clearly the basic difference between Lazarus and the rich man; the one puts his trust in the Lord, while the other puts his trust in himself. RELATED: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT

Friends, it is not surprising that the rich man in our gospel reading has no identity. Lazarus is called by name, Abraham is called by name, but the rich man is simply “the rich man”. This shows that riches do not bring recognition in God’s sight. A rich man or woman, who does not show charity, kindness, concern for the poor and oppressed; or somehow bring about a better world with his or her riches isn’t worth a name. It’s not about how famous we are here on earth; it’s more about how famous we shall be in heaven. So, are you known in heaven?
