HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE CONVENANT

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 8:51-59)
Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent (Day 37 of Lent)

In the day’s First Reading we have God telling Abraham His covenant with Israel. On God’s part, He will sustain and protect Israel gifting them with leaders, fertile land, and descendants. Israel, on the other hand, was expected to obey God’s commandments. The covenant will be the theme of God’s relationship with Israel. Many times Israel, through its people, will violate the commandments. Many times, God will forgive and welcome back Israel. All the time, God will be faithful.

We have the same story. The covenant is still active. This time, we have JESUS, God’s fulfillment of His promise and our savior. Jesus brought back the essence of the covenant which was changed and diluted by Israel. To be faithful to God means obeying His will and being worthy of the resurrection. From earthly life we enter eternal life.

Covenants are usually done by married couples. It is a special oath of two people in love with each other. It covers everything and lasts until death. Each partner makes a covenant to love the other whatever happens. Each expressed acceptance of the other in totality. No wonder, in the Scriptures, God used marriage as the imagery of His relationship with Israel, thus, with the Church and with us. We ought to consider our relationship with Him as husband and wife. God loves us for who we are. Our sins do not destroy that relationship unless we reject Him. God is always willing to forgive and give us a lot of chances. He will not be unfaithful to us.

This Holy Week we will witness the love of God in its perfection. In JESUS Christ, He will offer His only Son to die for us. Even when we were sinners, He did not abandon us. He wants us to be saved. Until now, He is faithful that He will be our God and we will be His people. It is about time to change the story or stick to the true story. Let us keep our part of the covenant. Let us commit to Him as our God.
