MOTHER'S PRIDE

HOMILY FOR TODAY, SATURDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

BY: FR. KARABARI PAUL

THEME: THE MOTHER’S PRIDE

‘Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked’
The family has always been the first school of values. And through a biological and traditional process, children at home are somewhat more attached to their mothers than their fathers; a setting that is gradually but certainly changing in contemporary cultures.

It is therefore not shocking to see that in the Gospel of today (Luke 11:27-28), the woman in the crowd gave the credit for a good upbringing of Jesus to the Mother. The core values of life are first learned from our Mothers whom we first have contact with by nature. So when the woman saw the wisdom of Jesus and the gifts in Him, she quickly honoured the Mother. This honour, however, is also prophetic since God has highly exalted her. This indeed is an encouragement for all mothers who are working so hard to instill the right values in the young ones; mothers who go through pain to mould their children and offer them hope for a better future.

Remarkably, Jesus’s response to the woman is a direct call for mothers to always keep the words of God as they bring up their children. The best gift a mother can give to her child in upbringing is still God.
In recognition of the fact that Mary kept the word of God and acted on it, Jesus meant it is not enough to give birth to and feed a child. But a mother who recognizes the place of God in her life and accepts the will of God is more honourable. Children must be brought up in God’s way. They must grow up recognizing and acknowledging their place in divine plan and wisdom. It is only so that they can fulfill their divine goal which the world fights so hard today to twist. In fact, Jesus affirmed that honour should be given to anyone who like and with Mary keeps the word of God. You are part of this blessing because you have the words of God in you.

A well trained character is an emblem of honour for the family. In most cases, character reveals family identity. Life is much more than a personal gift. We must intentionally use our resources to ensure the children entrusted to us acquire the right values that reflect God’s will and design in the upbringing of our children. It is only then that they become a source of joy for us and society. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Happy weekend.
