HOMILY FOR TUESDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIMES – YEAR A

THEME FOR TODAY: ONE THING IS NEEDFUL

BY: FR. KARABARI PAUL

Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful’

In the Gospel of today (Luke 10:38-42), Jesus addresses the anxiety that characterizes today’s world. We are so anxious and troubled by so many things. Insomnia is on the increase because it has been seriously difficult for many of us to handle the stress so generated.

Again, every day, we all have loads of things we need to do. But that the one thing which should be right at the top of our list, which is seeking God, is often neglected. A life with God is the most rewarding life possible. The Bible says: ‘You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand’ (Psalm 16:11).

So there is one thing that can really threaten our spiritual lives: busyness. It chokes our desire to connect with the divine. And Jesus is saying that having a daily connection with Him should be our priority. Sometimes, our faith can become mundane. We go to church, we read the Bible, we occasionally pray, but only because we think we have to or because it is a habit. If we feel like this, we need to try and connect with God in a new way. If we are too busy trying to tick off everything on our to-do lists, we can easily find that time with God ends up at the bottom of our agendas. Jesus told Martha, ‘You are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion’ (Luke 10:41-42). Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to Him. Martha loved Jesus and was worried about what He would eat. She was so busy serving Him that she didn’t know how to relax and enjoy being with Him.

One thing we may not realise is that what we judge as human beings to be important may not necessarily be so before God. We can’t price the mundane things over eternal gifts. God wants to be our top priority. David said, ‘The one thing I ask of the LORD – the thing I seek most – is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple’ (Psalm 27:4). Let us focus on the one thing that is most important – spending time with God.

So much attention is given to food and shelter. A very little time is paid to the soul. Life is almost a mechanical thing. Every new day is almost a right. And if there is more to it, we think we are lucky. We never see it as a blessing so that we don’t bother to find the Source and be grateful. We have just a little or no time at all to find delight in the presence of God. We are so concerned about so many things but losing one thing that is very important and needful. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
