HOMILY FOR TUESDAY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world.”

2 Cor 1:18-22; Psalm 119:119-135; Matt 5:13-16
St. Paul continues his exhortation to us by reassuring us of God’s faithfulness. God’s YES, the product of his love for us brought us into a lifegiving relationship with Jesus, one that is secured for us through the action and companionship of the Holy Spirit. That relationship is communion with Christ, who shares his very life and essence with us as disciples.

As such, he who is light and God’s favor to humanity empowers us to become for the world what he is to the world, so that through us, his presence may be forever ensured. That is the essence of his mandate to us today, making us salt and light of the world. We must, therefore, be the catalysts for the preservation of our world even as we allow the flavor of Christ’s presence in us transform that world at the same time. In times without a sense of direction, we must show the way forward, led by the Spirit of light through the darkness that engulfs our present world. In order to do that effectively, we must preserve the grace and light of God in us by constantly drawing on Christ, source of life, light and grace. In what way can you be salt and light for Christ in your family, Church community, work space and the larger society? What commitments can I make in my family to bring about positive changes in the life, fortunes and relationships of/in my family? We must heed Christ’s mandate to us; now, not later, so that we may be positive agents of transformation.
Lord, let your face shine on us, that our light may shine brightly before others. Amen.
