HOMILY FOR TUESDAY APRIL 12 2022

Wise people say “He who betrays you is not one from far away.” We are familiar with stories of love, relationship, backstabbing, snitching, and betrayal. Jesus experienced the pain of betrayal by one of his closest allies. He said to his disciples, “One of you will betray me” (John 13:21). Jesus identified Judas Son of Iscariot as the betrayer, yet, Judas neither apologized nor repented. He was blind to the opportunity Jesus gave him to reconsider his wicked plan. “Satan entered into him…He immediately went out and it was night” (John 13:27,30). We can imagine the psychological pain Jesus experienced as a result of his betrayal by Judas and having the knowledge that Peter, a stalwart among his disciples will deny Him three times. Like Jesus, anyone committed to the faith suffers hostility, betrayal, and rejection. Prophet Isaiah suffered and lamented, “I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity” (Isaiah 49:4) Nevertheless, he trusted in God’s protective love when he said: “My God has become my strength” (Isaiah 49:4). No betrayal should dampen our enthusiasm for serving God or make us give up our values. Like Judas, we too can fall into the temptation of betraying Jesus when we misplace our priority and place money above love and faith. Can the pleasure of the world, positions of office, a huge amount of money, and the lure of power make us betray Jesus and our Christian values?
