HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF HOLY WEEK YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: JESUS DEEPLY TROUBLED, DO YOU FEEL HIS PAIN?

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 13:21-38)
Tuesday of Holy Week

In the day’s Gospel Jesus is troubled. He is aware of His impending passion. But it was made more painful because one of His disciples will succumb to the devil’s temptation to betray Him. Peter, on the other hand, after knowing being made aware of things to come asserted himself. He was rebuked by the Lord by telling him that he will not be different. Peter will deny the Lord thrice!

Two men. Two disciples of Jesus. What happened to them? Jesus , Himself, invited them. Jesus formed them. They were witnesses to what Jesus did. They had a first hand experience of what Jesus said. How did they arrive at that point of betraying and denying the Lord? The devil is at work always. It attacks us at our weakest. Judas’ weakness was money. He was appointed treasurer. He was stealing money from the coffers of the group. Peter was afraid of death. Many times he had failed to assert his love and faith in Jesus because his life was in danger.

The ability to resist and fight temptation is truly hard. It is important that we found and strengthen our faith. The resurrection was crucial. Notice that the apostles were suddenly firm in faith after experiencing the resurrected Lord Jesus. The truth of the resurrection was the key. Peter, later, was designated leader of the apostles. While he denied the Lord in the face of death before, he died in faith for the Lord, later. Not so for Judas. He committed suicide earlier.

This Holy Tuesday, reflect on our faith. Would you prefer your fate and faith like Peter? Or would you be like Judas?
