HOMILY FOR TUESDAY JUNE 21 2022

St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Rel.

2 Kings 19:9-11,14-21,31-36; Matt. 7:6,12-14

The thing about heaven is that it’s not that easy to get into. But it’s where we all want to end up, by God’s grace. But we’re so selfish sometimes, we never treat others the way we want to be treated. Once it’s not about our good, we hardly give a hoot. This is not the Christian’s attitude. We cannot go through the wide and spacious way of ease and comfort and expect to get to heaven.

Friends, St Aloysius Gonzaga, whose memorial we celebrate today, understood this narrow road of selflessness perfectly. Why else would he abandon a life of nobility, ease and wealth in favour of a life of prayer, austerity and service? He was more interested in serving others than being served. During the plague of 1591, he committed himself so much to assisting the sick that he too caught the plague and died at the young age of 23. What an example! It’s the narrow gate and the hard road of self denial that leads to life; only a few find it. Do we want to make heaven? Time to do some slim fitting!

Good morning dear, God bless your day ahead.
