HOMILY THEME: THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICE

HOMILY: (My. 23:1-12) Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent

In today’s Gospel JESUS stressed on the importance of service. Religious leaders, particularly, should be aware and concerned about their responsibilities to their faithful. Mere external piety does not help. The good of the other must be their primary concern. In the First Reading, from the prophet Isaiah, he stressed the importance of humbling oneself before the Lord. Then, it must be followed by an effort to reparate. The damage done must be stopped and repaired. Then, take the initiative to reach out and serve authentically.

If we are to satisfy the Lord, we have to do things seriously and with all humility. We cannot treat God and man like our neighbors who have no grasp of our hearts. Even then, we should not treat our neighbors as ignorant of our true intentions. There should be a sincere and zealous effort to serve. We are not here to please each other. We are here to serve the Lord through our neighbors.

And then we will be great before the Lord. We were meant for service. God created us in His image and likeness. He gave us great gifts to steward creation. God made us His partners. All of these are geared towards fulfillment of our humanity which is attaining salvation and being with God in His Kingdom.
