HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF ADVENT

THEME: DO NOT BE AFRAID.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

Mary was visibly afraid when an angel appeared to her. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). Even though Mary was afraid of the strange appearance of the angel, she neither allowed fear to cripple her nor did she hide from the presence of the angel. She carefully listened to the message he relayed to her. Wise people say, the brave person is not he who doesn’t feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. As human beings and as Christians, we are naturally crippled by so many fears such as fear of the future, sickness, death, failure, abandonment, betrayal, and enemies.

In Nigeria today we need encouragement from the host of angels against the menace of unknown gunmen, kidnappers, bandits, terrorists, and fraudsters). Let all those who are terrified by violence hear the encouraging words of the Psalmist: You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness nor the destruction that wastes at noonday (Psalm 91:5-7). The Christmas season reminds us of Emmanuel, “God is with us.” Do we allow fear to take control of us? Do we take time to listen to the voice of God speaking within us and assuring us of his presence and protection?
