HOMILY FOR TUESDAY MAY 10 2022
We live in a world where goodness is a rare virtue, where compassion is minimal, and sensitivity is waning. The Psalmist laments “Help, Lord; for there is no longer any that is godly; for the faithful have vanished from among the sons of men” (Psalm 12:1). In a dark world, we find people like Barnabas, who was a rare gem, and an unsung hero whom scripture succinctly describes as a good man full of the Holy Spirit and faith. The name Barnabas means ‘son of encouragement,’ and his life is a fulfillment of his name. Barnabas proved to be a good man through his selfless service and the right attitude in serving the people of Antioch. He was a sincere and transparent man who sold his property and submitted all the proceeds to the Apostles (Acts of the Apostles 4:37). He believed in the people of Antioch, saw the good in them, and brought out the best in them. He was more interested in identifying their strengths than in picking their faults. Anyone who wishes to be good should cultivate the shining qualities of Barnabas which include kindness, excellent character, and selflessness. In short, anyone who wishes to be like Barnabas should imitate the virtue of encouraging others and identifying the good in each person. Who is your Barnabas and how often do you serve as a Barnabas to others?
