HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOD IS WITH US
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent. (Day 35 of Lent)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus reveals Himself fully to everyone. He reveals His mission and the company His Father gives Him. He also told them about their dying in sin if they continue to reject Him. Jesus was in complete trust of His Father. He was confident that the Father is always on His side. No wonder, Jesus was able to bear everything thrown at Him during His life and ministry. Even death had no hold on Him. The loving Father, the source of life, was always there to support Him.
Emmanuel was the name given to Jesus. It means “God with us.” It was not only a name for Jesus, the Son of God. It was God to all of us. The Father’s presence was not only meant for Jesus. From Creation, up to the end of this world, the Father is present. He is, in fact, omnipresent. He is present in the wind, the sun, water, mountains, the birds, animals, and us. He is also present in every life situation.
We have to admit that there are times we feel we had been abandoned by God. While it is not actually possible, we see the lack of response as an abandonment by God. The same feelings we have when bad things happen to us. But the truth is we make our own fate by the choices we make. Also, it is wrong to assume that for every dire situation or when we need God, God will always intervene. Remember that God gave us freedom. And that freedom will never be violated by God. Thus, we should not expect God to just step in and make things good for us. We make our decisions. Hopefully those decisions are in accordance with God’s will. If we do, what God had promised will be in us. If we don’t, we take responsibility for the consequences.
Prayer is the best experience of God’s presence. Not in the same physical way we each feel our presence. God, in His Spirit, dwells in us, inebriates us, and invigorates us. Let us summon the Spirit to ourselves and feel God’s optimum presence.
