HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR 1

By: DEACON BILL FRERE

THEME: Be Prepared! Part 2

Church of the Beatitudes, Sea of Galilee

Gospel – Luke 12: 39-48

It is a sick gut-wrenching feeling to come home from a long day at work and find your back door busted in, the living room ransacked and all the drawers pulled out and the contents scattered all over the floor. You feel lost, violated, unsafe for the future. You look around and wonder – what could I have done differently; what more could I have done to protect my home and my valuables! Why wasn’t I more prepared? As the Gospel today reminds, if only I had known when the thief was coming, I would have been prepared and he would not have broken in!

Today Jesus continues His discourse from yesterday’s Gospel on being prepared. And His message is clear! Be ready! Be faithful! Be vigilant! And be steadfast! He reminds us that we have all been called to a life of faith, a life of obedience to the will of the Father. And He reminds us that this will not be easy. That’s why Peter asks – is this meant for us or for everyone! The struggle to be Christian, the struggle between good and evil is a constant, life-long battle, not just one day, not just one season. And just some people! Everyone!!

I wonder how often we ask the same question! Is this meant for me? Not just those in authority, not just those who are lazy or unprofitable, not just those who don’t fulfill their responsibilities or lord it over others. Not just those who think they got away with something or blame others for their mistakes. It is meant for all of us, saints and sinners! Whether we think we got away with something or not! Whether we think we are good and everyone else is not! Master and servant – we are all called to prepare the table! We are all called to serve!

We are all called to be faithful and prudent servants, to persevere in the face of trials and temptations. And admittedly there will be times when we will falter and give in to our selfish side. But we need to remember – we are not alone in this struggle. The Master is always with us, to guide and protect, to encourage and to strengthen our resolve!
