HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Peter 1:18-25; Psalm 147:12-15,19-20; Mark 10:32-45
My Morning Minute With Jesus
Jesus, in today’s passion prediction, told his disciples about his impending troubles. Their lack of compassion or understanding was displayed in their response as they selfishly went for what was in it for them instead of focusing on the meaning and import of what Jesus just told them. They exhibited undue ambition, indifference, and cluelessness. Instead of staying focused on the important information on His impending passion, death and resurrection of which Jesus just spoke, His disciples were steeped in bitter rivalry and resentment, and clamor for power and fame. Jesus, instead of getting upset with them, taught true life lessons to the two brothers and the other disciples, who were just as clueless as they fought over positions in an earthly kingdom. Jesus corrected their attitude very quickly, teaching them that true greatness rested elsewhere: in humility, generous and selfless service, and servant leadership. These are the only good enough qualities for life in the community of those whose ransom was paid with the precious blood of Jesus, the spotless and unblemished Lamb of God. Such service makes God’s goodness and love overflow in our families, communities, families and churches.

Consequently, St. Peter exhorts us to shun the allure of worldly treasures that promise everything but lack any real lasting value. He challenges us to focus on the gift of faith and hope which we have received in Christ Jesus and love one another sincerely instead of tearing our families and communities down by unhealthy rivalry, bitter quarrels, resentment, envy and unguarded jealousy. We must follow Christ, the word of God that endures forever, who leads us on the path of righteousness, humility and service.
Lord, teach us humility and empathy; deliver us from evil, depraved, selfish and corrupt leaders. Amen.
