THEME: GOD AND CHILDREN.

An Afican proverb says, “If you fill your head with pride, you will lack space for wisdom.” Jesus praises humble people who are childlike. He excdaimed, T thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding (learned and clever) and revealed them to infants (mere children)” (Matthew 11:25). Ordinarily. one would think that by mentiontng the learned and clever Jesus is referring to all intellectuals and scholars.

Broadly speaking, the learned and clever people he is pointing to are those who claim to know everything and who are no longer disposed to learn anything new; the learned and clever are also those who are spiritually arrogant and people who are not humble enough to accept the humble and deep message of the gospel. Pride is indeed a capital sin. St. Augustine says, It was pride that changed angels into devils and itis humility that makes men as angels.” Mere children’ means humble people who are attracted to the Gospel. Noticeably, the people who always come close to Jesus are those who are disposed to learn and willing to depend on God’s grace and spirit.

The smartest, richest, very ntelligent, religious, and civic leaders often think they are so selfsufficient and the gospel message makes little or no sense to them. “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). Do we count ourselves among the mere children’ or among the clever?”
