Some writers describe the famous scriptural passage John 3:16 as the essence of the gospel and others see it as the good news in a nutshell. We may have different ideas and theories about God but the Bible gives us a vivid, accurate, and profound truth about the nature of God. God is love and Jesus explained the depth of God’s love when he said to Nicodemus, “God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). He sent a saviour into a degenerating world. A preacher said, “For God so loved the world that He didn’t send a committee.” Perhaps a committee would have still been deliberating and arguing about where the saviour should come from and to whom. God decided to embody and make His love visible and tangible in Jesus, the visible image of invisible God (Colossians 1:15). Let us thank God for the special gift he gave to us. He loves each of us in a special way and he wants us to know him, and love him. St. Augustine says, “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” Have you discovered how much God loves you and how do you respond to God’s love?
