*ABOUT THE FIRST READING*
In today’s first reading, Philip preaches the gospel in Samaria and the people there unite in welcoming the message Philip preached. In Luke’s first volume, Jesus had attempted to preach the gospel to a Samaritan village but they rejected Jesus because he was heading for Jerusalem. Now the risen Lord, through Philip, preaches the gospel to the Samaritans and this time they welcome the gospel. The Lord continues to offer the gospel even to those who have rejected it.

*ABOUT THE GOSPEL READING*
Jesus in today’s gospel calls Himself the ‘Bread of Life.’ But why does Jesus call Himself the bread of life? All of us know that bread is our staple food. We cannot live long if there is no physical food. Bread sustains us and gives us energy and other nutrients which is good for our physical bodies. Jesus is our Bread of Life because first, He offers Himself as our spiritual food which produces the very life of God within us. Second, He promises unbroken friendship and freedom from the fear of being forsaken or cut off from God. And third, He offers us the hope of sharing in His resurrection.

*CONCLUSION*
Dear brethrens, this part of the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus emphasizes the necessity of believing especially that He calls Himself as the Bread of Life. Faith is the greatest requirement demanded of those who want to follow Him. The necessity of faith as our response and acceptance of Jesus in general and in particular, belief in His words even if we often interpret ‘Bread of Life’ as His Body and Blood. ‘Bread of Life’ is also about His Words. It is because Jesus says: “One does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God,” (Matt 4:4).
May God be with us all, and may He bless our everyday works and good efforts. Through Christ our Lord Amen.
