HOMILY FOR JANUARY 4TH.

1 JOHN 3:7-10; JOHN 1:35-42

There are moments when we earnestly seek to encounter God. The two disciples of John the Baptist requested to encounter Jesus as soon as John the Baptist pointed to him as the Lamb of God. Apparently, their souls were, as the psalmist says, thirsty for God as in a dry weary land where there is no water (Psalm 63:1).

As they followed him, Jesus turned to them and asked an important question “What do you seek?” When people draw close to us, we should not hesitate to ask them about their expectations and what they seek. Likewise, when we draw close to people, we should examine ourselves to know what attracts us to others and what our expectations are.

We should discern the purpose of every relationship and see if it is for growth, mere pleasure, or self-interest. The two disciples did not say what they wanted, instead, they asked Jesus, “Where do you live?” Thelr question indicates they wanted to know him more and encounter him more closely. St. Ignatius of Loyola says to encounter God, “We must speak to God as a friend speaks to his friend, servant to his master; now asking some favor, now acknowledging our faults, and communicating to Him all that concerns us, our thoughts, Our fears, Our projects, our desires, and in all things seeking His counsel.” How passionate are we in seekingJesus and in desiring to have a deep encounter
with him?
