HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK

HOMILY THEME: LENT (PERIOD)ENDS; LENTEN OBSERVANCES SHOULDN’T END

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

READINGS: ISAIAH 50:4-9a, PSALM 69, MATTHEW 26:14-25

✓• Keep praying intensely
✓•Keep fasting commitedly
✓•Keep being charitable still.
✓•Being good is a way of life, it NEVER ENDS

Our first reading curled from Isaiah 50:4-9 is a beautiful portrait of Christ, the suffering servant of Yahweh and by extension, it is a picture of how the truly Christian should be.

In the first instance, the servant, like a well-trained disciple does not refuse the divine vocation. Jesus, knew the perils involved in his God-given vocation, his body failed him in Gethsemane, we heard him cry to God to take the cup of pain from him, yet, in obedience to the Father’s will he prayed that God’s will be done (Lk. 22:42). Secondly, the servant of God willingly submits to insults and even beating; meaning, he is non-violent come what may. Jesus proved himself to be non-violent when he was arrested, he handed himself to the soldiers even though he could have outdone them with his power. He even charged Peter never to use the sword against his adversaries. (Jn. 18:1-11).

More so, the true servant of God would never be an obstacle to the realization of God’s eternal plan. He/she wouldn’t stop God’s plan even if they had the wherewithal to do so. Jesus Christ, the true servant had his betrayer in his cohort all through his public ministry. He could have easily made away with him in order to stop his future act, a thing he never did. We may want to learn from Jesus; the will of God must prevail, his plan must be accomplished. Besides, God’s plans for us, no matter how bizarre they seem before our human eyes are evil; rather, they are always for our good.

When we, God’s chosen, become his true servants like Christ did, then we can say in the face of shame and difficulty (using the words of Isaiah 50:7); “The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced…I shall not be put to shame”. I pray God to stay very close to all of us his servants in order to ward off our adversaries who try to ensnare us. I pray that he answers us in his great mercy and at his favourable time (Ps. 69:14).

KEEP BEING GOOD: FEED THE POOR, ASSIST THOSE IN NEED, STRENGTHEN THE WEAK AND EDUCATE THE IGNORANT…

God bless, heal and restore his wounded creation. Amen
