HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT.

THEME: PERSECUTION OF THE JUST.

BY: FR. GERALD M.  MUSA.

Persecution is a necessary requirement for greatness and glory. The prophet Jeremiah was persecuted by haters of truth who plotted against him and accused him falsely, but he trusted in God and completed his mission. Jesus spoke about his imminent suffering, crudifixion and death, but that did not stop himn firom speaking the truth and serving selflessly. He said, anyone who0 wishes to be great must be willing to serve selfilessly and give his life as a ransom for marny.

The crucifixion and death of Jesus teach us that the cross comes before the crown of glory. Accortling to the Psalmist, “Many are the afilictions of the just, but the Lortd delivers him from them all” (34:19). Tertullian, one of the early fathers of the Church boldly said to persecutors of Christians: “Torture us, rack us, condemn us, crush us; your cruelty only proves our innocence. That is why God suflers us to suffer all this.”
Jesus’ life and teaching embolden good peojple and messengers oftruth to remain steadfast in speaking the truth and doing what is right. “Nothing great was ever done without much enduring” says St. Catherine of Siena. Sadly, many innocent people are persecuted for their faith and subjected to humiliation because of their belief, integrity and speaking the truth to those in power Does persecution or the cross blind us from seeing the coming crown?
