HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: JESUS, ONE WITH THE FATHER

HOMILY: (Jn. 12:44-50) Wednesday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus reveals His being one with the Father. What the Father wanted us to see and hear, we can see and hear from the Lord Jesus. It follows that those who believe in Him believe in the Father and those who reject Him reject the Father. The Father is responding to our basic human need, i.e. an experience through the senses.

We need to see, hear, smell, taste and feel in order to believe. Faith transcends all of these needs for the experiences via the senses. God responded to this need by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ, to become one like us. In Jesus Christ, we now see, hear, and feel God. God is not anymore somebody who is “watching from a distance.” God dwelt among us, as the Scriptures say.

We can understand the doubt and rejection of the Jews, in a limited sense. They are monotheistic, they believe in one God. It was hard for them to believe that God will become one like us, an unimaginable and impossible act for us. But we believe in the Incarnation. In the context of the resurrection and tracing everything in all Scriptures, God made that grand decision. He loves us so much that He sent His only begotten Son and died for us. This is a matter of faith. But we have many reasons to believe.
