HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF LENT.

THEME: GOD MADE VISIBLE.

BY: FR. GERALD M. MUSA.

Anyone who studies the Bible reflectively will observe that the words and works of Jesus were not that of an ordinary man. He was much more than a sage and more than an erudite teacher. In his words, we hear God speaking, in his teaching, we learn more about God. He says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the father” John 14:9) and “He who does not honour the Son, does not honour the Father who sent Him” John 5:23).

Therefore, Jesus is God made visible and, in His works, we see the compassion of God in action. St. Ambrose states, “The Son is the Image of the invisihle God. All things that belong to the Father He expresses as the Image; all things that are the Father’s He illumines as the splendour of His glory and manifests to us.” He was filled with divine compassion for the afflicted such as the sick, the dying, crippled, blind, poor and sinners.

He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah about the compassionate nature of God. The prophet asks, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?” He adds, even if a mother should forget her child, God will not abandon his people (Isaiah 49:15). Can we talke time to reflect on the merciful works of Jesus during this season ofLent? ISAIAH 49:8-15; JOHN 5:17-30;
