HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 18 2022

(Jn. 15:1-8) Wednesday in the Fifth Week of Easter

Jesus gives another image of Himself. He is the true vine and we are the branches. In addition, He makes mention of the Father who prunes the branches so that they may bear fruit. Jesus knew the language and experience of the Jews. Growing grapes, which are vines, is considered as one of their main livelihood. They knew well the important connection between the vine and the branches and the significance of pruning for bearing fruit.

We again have another idea of our relationship with Jesus and the Father. We cannot but be connected with Jesus. The Church uses this Gospel during weddings in order to encourage the couple to live their married life walkways connected to the Lord. The connection makes possible the good communication between them. With Jesus, who taught us the commandments, guidance and graces will flow. On the other hand, the dependence of the couple transmits their longings and prayers to the Lord. The connection guarantees the flow of grace and faith.

Pruning is disciplining or curbing our unwanted desires. We are not perfect and we need to be formed according to the Lord’s teachings. Pruning maybe painful but it is temporary. The Father will not tolerate anything that will separate us from him. Of course, it will need our cooperation. When we submit ourselves to the Father’s discipline, we die a little but we gain eternal life.
