HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I.

THEME: THE 1ST PROMISE OF SALVATION.

BY: Benedict Agbo (Rev Fr)

*Gen 8: 6 – 22, Mk 8: 22 – 26.

The saving vessel that carries Noah and his family is the Ark built according to the directives of Yahweh. The 1st thing that Noah does whenhe touches dry land is to offer sacrifice to the Lord. The Ark is the symbol of the Church – also built according to God’s directives in which we ride the waves of the world. Noah’s sacrifice is the primitive prototype of the mass which is essentially a sacrifice of praise and gratitude. The Word of God says that when the Lord smelled the pleasing odour of the incense, he said in his heart ‘I will never again curse the ground because of man’.

The guidance of the dove represents the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our journey towards salvation. The dove appeared several times to guide Noah in the process of discernment until dry ground was confirmed. So does the Holy Spirit guide us as partner in our prayer life. That is why the dove came at Jesus’ baptism to show the parallel relationship between primitive and modern account of salvation.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

The concept of the Ark as God’s saving vessel designed according to his will is found most apt in the Blessed Virgin Mary – the ark of the new covenant. She was designed by God from her mother’s womb to become a perfect picture of the new Eve who will show us a new paradigm of faith, humility and obedience to the will of God. Jesus presents her to John as the mother of the Church at his very last hour, Jn 19: 27.

Today, instead of worshipping God according to the pattern he has established, many invent their own version of the Ark. The 1st world countries are being polluted again by pride. They want to be like God – creating and recreating human beings by cloning, trangender madness, artificial insemination, etc. Many churches have rewritten their own Bible or its exegesis and invented their own concept of worship. We just hope that God remains patient with man as he promised in today’s 1st reading and keep providing us means of salvation. As the blind man was taken away from his village and healed through the repeated actions of Christ, may we be taken out of our corrupt environment and healed gradually through the sacraments and the repeated words and actions of Christ. May God bless you today!
