HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 1 2022

A last wish of parents is that their children remain united. Likewise, leaders pray that their followers remain united. When the Apostle Paul completed his mission at Ephesus, he delivered an emotion-laden farewell speech to the elders of that Church. He admonished them to be alert, knowing there will be fierce wolves who will come in among them to scatter their unity and men from among them who will deviate from the truth. Long before the Apostle Paul, Jesus prayed for his followers before he departed from the world. He prayed “That they may be one” (John 17:11) and that their unity will be a sign of contradiction in a world that is so divided. He wants his followers to be united, to operate with one voice, one mind, one heart, and one spirit. Further, he prayed that his followers bring joy to a world that is full of sadness and sorrow. In addition, he prayed for his followers to be delivered from the wiles of the Evil One. He does not want them to be taken away from the world, but to conquer the world and overcome the challenges the world sets before them. They are to bring light to a world that is full of darkness; finally, he prayed to God to sanctify his followers in truth. How united are the followers of Christ today?
