HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: TOUCHING THE HARDENED HEART

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(MK. 1:29-39)
In the day’s Gospel, Jesus healed the fever of Peter’s mother-in-law. Some may see this as “palakasan” but Jesus is far from committing one thereby endangering His mission and ministry. In fact, He also healed many who came to Him for healing. He would always take the opportunity of showing God’s power in order to touch a hardened heart.

What is interesting is how the evangelist noted what Peter’s mother-in-law did after she was healed. Immediately she waited on them. It means, very gratified, she expressed her gratitude by serving Jesus and His apostles. As was mentioned, Jesus cured many. How many gave thanks and served?

We go back to the times when we were in dire need of God’s grace; healing, job, peace, money, success, etc. Am sure many of us had experienced being gifted by God with those or with something better. We were just too happy to have obtained those graces. How many of us gave thanks? How many of us, out of gratitude served the Lord. How many returned the favour through helping other people?

The next morning, Jesus wanted to preach to the other villages. Jesus used not only deeds (miracles) but also powerful words. Both words and deeds work for each other. They compliment in Jesus’ ministry. In the mass, the beginning part is the Liturgy of the Word. The later part is the breaking of bread. The proclamation of the Word precedes the Eucharist for a reason. The people are nourished in word and in deed. With the Word of God, the Eucharist becomes meaningful and believable.

The miracle of the turning of the bread into the body of Jesus and the wine into His blood becomes acceptable through the Word. Remember the two disciples on the road to Emmaus? How did they recognise the risen Jesus? Through the breaking of the bread! But only after Jesus told them His story as told by Scriptures!
