HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT

HOMILY THEME: JESUS REVEALS HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FATHER

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 5:17-30)
Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Lent (Day 29 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus reveals His relationship with His Father and the work they are doing. They are one yet they are different. Jesus states that there is nothing He is doing that does not come from the Father. Jesus further talks about the resurrection. Farther and deeper into His ministry, Jesus is realising and nearing His mission as planned by the Father. The evangelist John’s language was able to capture this aspect of Jesus, His divinity and His mission. The beginning of the Gospel summarizes the Gospel today, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.”

Creation did not end on the 6th day. God did not say, “Ok, everything had been created. I am done!” God is still at work in the sense that He sustains creation. His graces still flow in all His creation. The sun still shines. The air still moves. The plants and animals grow. We continue to exist. When God stops working, everything stops too!

Jesus came for a mission. His mission is salvation. He was sent to bring the Good News to everyone so that the life God had given will come into fulfilment. He did not leave us on our own. Yes, He granted us free will but we are provided with choices which hopefully our free will will discern and choose the one which will lead us to the Kingdom. While we salvation will be merited for everyone, everyone should be worthy of it. Further, everyone should ache for it. God will always offer it to us. We must go and take it.

We can learn from St. Augustine: “God created us without our consent. God will not save us without our consent.”
