HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE TWENTY-EIGHT WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

HOMILY THEME: THE GENERATION OF SIGNS

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:
(Lk. 11:29-32)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus admonishes the people regarding their generation. He went as far as saying they are an evil generation. The issue was their asking for a sign. He cited the sign of Jonah and the Queen of the south. The Ninevites responded to Jonah’s call to repentance while the Queen of the south trusted the wisdom of Solomon. Both benefited from the two representatives of God.

Not the case with the Jews. No less than the Son of God was sent to being the Good News of salvation. God personally attended to our salvation. He did more than just proclaiming the Good News but offered His life for us. It was a testimony of His great love for us and the necessity of salvation.

Signs are part of human experience. We operate through signs. We need signs in order for us to be guided and educated. Our capacity to recognize and understand signs reflects our maturity in life, and especially in faith. But we should not miss the most important sign. Jesus is God’s perfect sign of His presence and love. In Jesus, the sign is the signified and the messenger is the message. The Jews missed recognizing Jesus.

As for us, we were given better and bigger signs. We have the whole life and ministry of Jesus including Hid mysteries. We have far less reasons not to believe in Him. Will we commit the same mistake as the Jews? It is interesting to note that even up to now, the Jews are still waiting for the Messiah. They had not learned their lesson. Jesus is the Messiah the Scriptures prophesied. Let us not insist on more signs which are usually self determined. Rather, let us reflect and savor what were given to us and be open to God’s New revelations.
