HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: SIGNS AND THE MESSAGE

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 8:11-13)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus was being asked by the Pharisees to give a sign from heaven as a test to who He really was. Jesus responded with a deep sigh. It was an expression of near frustration for the hardness of heart and blindness of the Pharisees. Also, Jesus, as a sign of exasperation to the Pharisees said that He would not give a sign to their generation. We wonder why?

The point of Jesus was, if He, The Sign and The Message of God was not recognised, no other sign will change their minds and make them believe. Jesus was the perfect sign and the message. In Jesus, the sign is the message Himself. Not recognising Jesus, the perfect sign, will only result to non-recognition of any sign from heaven.

God also uses signs to communicate to us. As human beings, we operate through the senses. Through the senses, God reveals to us His messages. The Church reminds us to look at the signs of the times. What are happening to the world and people around us give messages about life and about faith. The growing immorality, for example, is a clear sign for us to change our ways. Unless we change, things will be more difficult for all of us. But, hopefully, we will not miss the perfect sign in Jesus Christ. His words and deeds are what will lead us to salvation.
