HOMILY FOR THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS. SOLEMNITY OF MARY MOTHER OF GOD

HOMILY THEME: GOD SENT HIS SON BORN OF A WOMAN

HOMILY:

Happy new year dear friends and thank God for yet another opportunity to encounter him.

On this 8th day of Christmas, and 1st day in the New Year, it is pertinent that we commit ourselves, families and work in 2018, into the hands of God through this great woman whom the angel described as Full of Grace and whom we celebrate today as the Mother of God. This woman has been tested and trusted. She is the same woman whom we just finished celebrating her Son @Christmas, conceived of the Holy Spirit and gave birthday to the saviour of the world.

Come to think of it, this unique woman whom God found favour with to the extent of entrusting his Only Begotten Son with, must be endowed with heavenly beatitudes.

Mary never failed in her duties towards Jesus. Before and after the birth of Christ, she proved to be available, dependable, reliable and trustworthy.

She not only brought forth Jesus to the world, she accompanied Him like a disciple where ever he went.

From the manger to the foot of the cross. And from Pentecost to the Ascension, Mary was never missing in any key event of Jesus’ life and ministry.

She was not only a mother and caregiver, but also a disciple and companion to Jesus. St John rightly describes Jesus “the Word” as God (Jn 1, 1).

It is therefore pertinent today as we celebrate Mary the mother of God and we are asking her to take us also, as her sons and daughters. Since she was able to care for our God made man, she will definitely take good and proper care of us all.

This is what St Paul means when he wrote that: God sent forth his Son, born of a woman… so that we might receive adoption as sons and daughters (Gal 4, 4-5).

In this New year, let us take more seriously our devotion to God through his mother Mary. There is never any prayers which we make through her that goes unattended.

Let us pray that through the intercession of Mary Mother of God:

The Lord may bless and keep us+

The Lords face may shine upon us and be gracious to us+

The Lord may lift up his countenance upon us and give us his peace+ Amen.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
