HOMILY OF 10TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “You received without charge; give without charge.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 11:21-26,13:1-3, Ps. 98:1-6, Matthew 5:17-19

On the feast of Apostle, Barnabas, we are reminded of our mission as disciples who are sent into the world as messengers of peace and who must proclaim the good news, welcome or unwelcome, without compromising the truth. We do not know as much about Barnabas as we know about of some of the other apostles.

The first reading reminds us that he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith, the two indispensable gifts needed by every disciple. So he is our patron saint in that regard. But, also, Barnabas was a very understanding and patient person. But for him, Paul would have had a harder time gaining acceptance amongst early Christians. At a time when everyone was afraid of Saul turned Paul, it was Barnabas who offered him friendship, companionship and mentorship. Both of them worked together extensively before parting ways because of the demands of the mission. Barnabas’ exemplary patience is even more pronounced when you consider how he handled the issue of the young John Mark, whom Paul could no longer stand because he was thought to be insufficiently committed. Barnabas was a man who meant his YES and his NO, and so should we all be; persons with integrity, before God and humans. All in all, our work as disciples is simply giving out what we have, ourselves, received freely. We should, therefore, not let the crave for earthly reward mare our ministry and commitment to Christ.

Lord, make us instruments of your healing, joy and peace. Amen.
